Mr. Richard Allen Heyward was born on October 23, 1940, in Charleston, South Carolina, to Elijah and Sadie Heyward. On January 20, 2026, he was called to his heavenly home by the Lord. Throughout his long, happy, and fulfilling life, Mr. Heyward was truly blessed.
For more than 45 years, Mr. Heyward was self-employed and contracted with the United States Postal Service. He was a dedicated member of Mount Carmel AME Church, always willing to give of himself whenever needed. He served faithfully as Senior Deacon and as a member of the Board of Trustees under the leadership of Reverend Earlene McBride. Special thanks to Rev Robert Freeman as the leader he served under.
Mr. Heyward’s love for God and people was evident in all he did. He showed deep commitment to the communities around him, consistently organizing the Community Fish Fry on the second Saturday of each month. Among his other passions were fishing and playing dominoes. He deeply enjoyed traveling to the Carolina’s every year for the 4th of July a family tradition started in 1987.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Elijah and Sadie Heyward; his devoted wife, Betty J. Heyward; his brothers, Andrew Heyward, Johnny Heyward, Adam Heyward, Christopher Heyward, Herbert Heyward, and Melvin Heyward; his sisters, Edith, Wilhelmina, and Geneva; his sons, James (Lucky) Jackson, Joe Jackson, and Dennis Jackson; and his daughter, Francedia (Pat) King.
He leaves precious memories to be cherished by his loving brothers, Eddie Heyward, Joseph Heyward, and Esaw Heyward; his children, Margaret Glover (spouse Willie), Richard Heyward Jr. (spouse Sherna), Shannon Heyward (spouse Sarina), Callie Edmond, Charles Jackson, and Darrell Jackson; forty grandchildren; a host of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; as well as nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Mr. Heyward will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Matthews 11:28
